Toolbox Series: The Mega Creative

Toolbox Series: The Mega Creativefeatured

Argh we’re THIS excite for this weeks toolbox!

Our newest bestie (yeah, we said it!) Erika Rax, mega creative is just that… A MEGA Creative. With the titles of stylist/baker/photographer/event co-ordinator/graphic designer under her belt/s it’s no wonder she’s in such hot demand. All round nice woman, you’ll wanna write down some of these tools she has cause they are accessible and a must for anyone wanting to get some more titles to their credit.

Take it away Erika!

The Job

What is you profession?

I am a freelance photographer/designer/stylist. Which basically just means that I’ll take any creative job I’m thrown.

How did you get into doing what you do?

After school I studied graphic design because I had no idea what I wanted to be and liked the sound of it even though I honestly had no idea what graphic design was. I sort of enjoyed it but didn’t really ever see myself working for an agency so I just got a job after I graduated doing graphic design/admin for a very small online store. I hated how little creative input I had and got a new job doing the same thing for another company. Same thing happened (surprising huh?) so one day I quit my job (I didn’t do this on a total whim I promise) and started freelancing. To get my first jobs I tagged along with photographer friends on shoots and collaborated with friends to build a portfolio. I pretty much just said yes to everything (like, um, sure I’ll make your clients cookies for christmas and um, sure I can photograph your workshop) and figured out how to do it on the job and by googling a lot. Eventually, I had enough things going on to call it a job.

What motivates or inspires you?

Other people. I love collaborating and working with other people and feeding off each other’s energy. I am also motivated by them bills (womp womp).

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Oh my goodness! Who. Knows. Really my only goal for the future is to live in another country for at least a year. And to keep enjoying what I’m doing every day.

When you’re not doing your work job what are some hobbies you enjoy?

I’m a total couch potato (hello trashy tv) but when I do leave the house I like to eat and breakfast is a pretty big deal to me. I also like riding my bike (obviously not in winter) and getting out of town whenever possible.

Now…what’s in your toolbox?

1 | iPhone

For Instagram and Twitter. Also for emails I guess.

2 | Adobe Creative Cloud

At any point in time I am probably busy using Lightroom or Photoshop or daydreaming about it – all hail the healing brush.

3 | Camera

My bff.

4 | Trello

I am a list fanatic and this is the best way I’ve found to keep track of my thoughts – in neat little lists – between my phone, laptop and iPad.

5 | Calendar/Monthly Planner

I use a desk calendar because I like to map out my week on paper. Begrudgingly I then transfer everything to my phone calendar so that I know whats what when I’m not at my desk.

6 | Audible

I have recently started listening to books while doing jobs that don’t require too much brainpower (like photo editing).

7 | Craft Supplies

Glue guns, glitter, scrap paper, washi tape etc rule my life.

8 | My ever-growing collection of props

I am a frequent at op shops buying up all the tins, utensils, jars and napkins that some crazy person gave away. Never underestimate the power of the perfect wooden board.
