Movie of the the Week: Sound City

Movie of the the Week: Sound Cityfeatured

Ok so I gues technically this isn’t a movie as it’s more of a documentary but you better get used to it cause ima throw a whole lotta docos in this category.

A’ight Sound City, if you have a “To Watch List” put this at the top!
Sound City is a documentary directed by your favourite foo fighter Mr Dave Grohl as he takes us on a journey to the seedy underbelly of rock and roll history and to a little place called SOUND CITY.

Sound City is a proclaimed recording studio that have been home to many recording artist such as Fleetwood Mac, Johnny Cash, Nirvana, Tom Petty, Ben Folds, Neil Young, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, REO Speedwagon, Cheap Trick, Arctic Monkeys, Buckingham Nicks, Rick Springfield…. gah the list goes on and on.

Sound City is far from your Abbey Road and EMI recording studios, in its hay day Sound City was a run down shabby place with shagpile carpet on the walls, that nobody thought anyone would want to record music in for 1 day let alone a couple of months. So why have so many awesome bands flocked to this studio to record their tunes?
It essentially come down to the Neve Console, which only 4 were made in the world and one of them…. was at Sound City!

Today with digital technology and every second teenager with protools on their computer more and more bands were heading back to Sound City to get something back that the computer was taking away. Cue Dave Grohl.
When Mr Grohl heard Sound City was closing he bought the Neve Console and moved into his home studio (as you do) and with it he made a record with all the recording artists that, if you had bought that console you’d want them on this record.

But this doco isn’t just about the record and isn’t about how many cool friend Grohl has, it’s about music and what a bunch of kids with a couple of dollahs could do with the right people and some good acoustics, that would essentially change the music industry forever.
